Traditional Medicines for Cancer

Few days ago, I posted about the Cancer Biography book ("Emperor of all maladies: A biography of cancer"). That book discusses how different "western" treatments for cancer were evolved during last 200 years.

For a lot of people, especially those in advanced stages, Cancer comes with a timer indicating how long the patient will live. My mother's diagnosis came with a 1 month timer, meaning just 1 month left to live. None of the western treatments (Chemotherapy, Radiation, Surgery etc.) were suitable for her since she was 84 years old and physically very weak. As per doctors, all of those treatments were capable of taking her life instantly. Even though, almost all the time I think about traditional medicines to cure chronic and untreatable medical conditions, this 1 month timer created a block in my thought process, as if not to try anything for her. It took me a few days to come back to normalcy so as to seek the following Traditional Alternative treatments.

Shimoga - Vaidya Narayana Murthy

As soon as my mother's cancer diagnosis came, my wife was pushing me to enquire about the Cancer treatment at Shimoga. As I wrote earlier, it took some time to start investigation about Traditional medicines for cancer. But, when I started, within a day, through my friends, I got 3 references (all of them closely connected to my friends) where the Shimoga treatment had worked. Talked to them and heard the very positive experience they had.

- A woman (age in 50s) with Leukemia (in Stage 2) where Chemotherapy was not done. Her blood counts had come back almost close to normalcy after 1 year and she is continuing the medicine.

- A woman (age in 70s) with Stomach cancer for which she had undergone surgery and a heavy tumor was removed. Later, the cancer came back with much higher intensity and she had no hope from Western treatments. At that time, she started consuming medicine from Shimoga and the cancer was cured. She lived 7 or 8 years more and died due to natural causes.

- A man (age in 40s) with cancer in Pituitary gland had no hope from western medicine, but is cured and leading normal life.

Within 2 days, I went to Shimoga and got the medicine. In normal circumstances, going there and getting the medicine is time consuming and stressful. The troubles are as follows ... 2.5-3 days to go there and come back, 6-8 hours of wait time (just standing in the queue since there will be nearly 1000 patients every day) to see the Vaidyan, only 1 minute to consult Vaidyan, language barrier (Vaidyan knows Tulu/Kannada only), they give only 28 days supply of medicines etc. But, seriousness of the situation and our need for the medicines reduced the intensity of all these troubles.

After reaching Shimoga I met one patient's relatives from Pune who had come to collect medicines. The patient had Liver cancer plus one other body part (I forgot). They were doing scans every month, and they had found that the tumor size was decreasing every month.

But, Shimoga medicine did not work for my mother. For some people, consuming this medicine will cause excessive "spitting". Due to this reason, my mother could not handle the medicine and she stopped consuming it after 3 weeks.

But, as far as I know, Vaidyan Narayana Murth's medicine is effective for many people. Someone told me that this medicine is a "natural chemotherapy".

Homeo Medicine - Dr.

Since the Shimoga medicine did not work for my mother, I was clueless on what to do. I had heard about Homeo treatment for caner.. but never paid any attention and used to think

"How can Homeo treat cancer? It may treat some Asthma or other conditions... but Homeo cure for cancer..? Impossible.. "

(Peringavu, Thrissur) and asked me to contact him. By that time, I had come back to USA. I contacted Dr. Thampi from California and my mother was on his medication (for 4 months) till she passed away. Symptomatically, my mother's cancer had seemed to stop (or slow down) its progression due to his treatment. The quantity of food (liquid food only) that my mother could consume was gradually coming down day by day. But, she could consume same quantity of liquid food from the day she started homeo medicine for next 4 months up to couple of weeks before she died. Considering she was diagnosed quite late and her general health was not that great, she had a fairly decent quality of life during those 4 months. I had not met Dr. Thampi before, but he was very helpful and co-operative to treat and take care of my mother.

Simarouba (Lakshmi Tharu) - Dr. Shyamsundar Joshi

On my way to Shimoga, I had consulted Dr. Shyamsundar Joshi in Bangalore. Got one reference of a man (age 70s) who got cured by this Doctor's medicine (this man could not consume Shimoga medicine like mother, due to spitting issues) and lived couple of years and eventually passed away due to natural causes.

My mother had spitting issues with this medicine too and we did not pursue this path.

Ayurveda - Dr. C. D Sahadevan

One of my neighbors in Thrissur, who is an Ayurvedic Doctor recommended Dr. C. D Sahadeven (based in Thodupuzha, but consults patients at Ernakulam, Thrissur etc.). We got medicine from him, but my mother did not consume the medicines since we had started Homeo by that time.

I had heard about him 16 years ago about his Cancer treatments. He seems to be a very committed doctor for treating cancer patients. I did not contact him.

Western Treatments vs. Traditional Treatments

In general, most of the cancer patients go through Chemotherapy, Surgery, Radiation etc. "Early detection" and "specific type of cancer" may be the deciding factors for these treatments to be effective. Otherwise, these treatments are still a torture to the patient as it has been from the times theses treatments had been discovered.

Most of the time, patients seek Traditional treatments after they exhaust all western treatment options. Traditional treatments seems to work for many type of cancers. It is important to note that, many of these cures using Traditional treatments are happening on bodies whose health and immunity had been tortured to bring them to their knees (by western treatments) .

Efficacy of western treatments for Cancer had been studied and measured well, which gives people a trust and belief in these medicines, even though it may not help them. Meanwhile, no organized study is being conducted on Traditional medicine effect on cancer, which makes people very much afraid to seek the treatment.

Media/hospital mafia are very much interested to spread negative news about Traditional medicines. Looks like, some articles in Kerala newspapers spreading negative news about Shimoga medicine (I guess a doctor named Gangadharan) had reduced Malayali crowd at Shimoga. At least, people should be aware of Hospital's motivations.. their ultimate purpose is to make more money and not to improve patient's life. So, if traditional medicines become popular and effective, there will be less profit for Hospitals.

Conclusion

In general, it is quite easy to recommend a Traditional treatment for most of the diseases except Cancer. Unlike other diseases, Cancer is almost sure to take patient's life.. So, nobody can confidently recommend any treatment (both Traditional or Western) for most types of cancers. My request to everyone (if anyone has read up to this point) is to keep all options open and to do thorough research and investigation of all available options to see whether it is helpful to the patient. No Doctor has an ultimate say in this disease... we are our own... to fight this disease.

PS: What I wrote is to give people an awareness of Traditional Medicines which can cause a positive result in the fight against cancer. All these Traditional treatments are posted here since I had got some references to one ore more success stories or they were recommended by some other Doctor. While "western medicine only" treatments are effective for some types of cancers and when some cancers are detected early, it is not effective against many other types of cancers. So, keep Traditional Medicine also in your thoughts as a potential option. There is no clear answer to whether "Traditional Medicine alone" or "Traditional Medicine combined with Western treatments" is the right approach. How to use and when to use needs to be evaluated by each individual as per their condition since each cancer case is different.
